Scientific Name: Washingtonia robusta
Common Name: Washington Palm Tree Seedlings 03 SL
Type of Plant: Palm Tree
A few young Washingtonia robusta palm trees. I took the picture of several Washingtonia robusta palm trees just as they are on a table in the Dougherty Garden. The yellow are old leaves which brown out and need to be pruned off to let the the new leaves emerge. One has to be a bit careful as the edges of the leaf stem have several sharp points on the edges that will give you a nasty cut if you are not careful.
The Washington robusta palm tree grows a foot or so a year if you plant it in the ground. I have one in the front and another in the back of the house. For some reason, the one in the back of the house has a wider trunk than the one growing in the front of the house. Also, I grew one as a potted plant that I kept in the sun on the patio in back of the house for several years. It makes a great potted plant for the patio until it grows too large and outgrows the pot.
