A medal that I was extremely proud to get was this Rifle Expert Badge. My first time with firing a rifle was at Parris Island Boot Camp and I received a Marksman Badge. The second time that I was getting ready to get a badge was cut short because I had a tooth infection and had to get out of the firing range and go to the dentist to a get a tooth extracted. The third time was a treat because I was healthy, feeling good and earned a Rifle Expet Badge.
The reason that it was so cool is that I was up against some old timers that were on the range at the same time and they had to do their annual qualification. I did my usual 'snapping in' which gets you in shape physically to get in the assorted positions to fire your rifle. I believe that it was standing, sitting and the prone position.
I remember the last position was that of the prone position because I remember getting uip after firing my M1 Rifle and firing 10 shots at the target 500 yards away and getting 7 out of 10 shots in the black. That was a treat because you were 500 yards away from the target and I just concentrated on the target and fired 10 shots very fast and when I got up the older Marine that was next to me was still firing when I got up. He got 8 or 9 out of the ten shots in the black and won the bragging rights for beating me. I said to myself that if I had taken my time, I would have gotten the ten shots in the black. He said to me to try again next year, cityboy.
In a way, I ws lucky that I fired fast because I might have ended up going to Vietnam and trained as a sniper. Enjoy,
