Pepsico, Inc. at 500 Park Avenue
At one time, Pepsico, Inc. was located at 500 Park Avenue, on the SW corner of 59th Street and Park Avenue. I worked diagonally across the street at 505 Park Avenue on the 14th floor with a few other divisions of Pepsico, Inc. whichwas growing fast and relocation to Rye, New York was not too far off.
Short Marty Note: In this picture, we're looking west at 500 Park Avenue. I believe that Olivetti took over the building when Pepsico, Inc. left New York City. When I was working there, Frito Lay Potatoe Chip were purchased by Pepsico, Inc. and they had an office in this building but their corporate office was in Texas.
The area had numerous stores, businesses and restaurants. It was convenient if you lived in Yorkville, it was the first stop on the expressline. Right down the street was Bloom's of San Francisco, an upscale restaurant that was out of my payscale but was attainbale due to a change in bosses at Empire State Sugar Division, Inc.
The director of Pepsico, Inc. was changed. This person changed the top person at the Sugar Division whose first call to business was to call in the sales staff to tell them to cut back on expenses. One salesman immediately cut back and the other salesman came into the cubicle that I shared with Frank to invite us to lunch at Blum's of San Francisco.
He looked at Frank and said that you are Mr. S***** from Philadelphia and then looked at me and said that you are Mr. S***** from Baltimore. These were two brokers that handled sales of the excess liquid sugar produced by the plant in Long Island City. He looked at us both and said that it was time to cut back and said let's go to lunch.
As a matter of fact, someone high up in Pepsico, Inc. got in trouble when he made a comment to one of the city's papers that he would love to bicycle to work from his home in Marmaroneck, N.Y. rather than commuting to New York City.
Every once in a while, I had to walk across the street to drop off an inter office memos to the assorted divisions. I always stopped at the Herman Lay Division, that was Frito Lay Potato Chips, to drop off a memo. I used to get a kick out of talking to his secretary and asking if Herman Lay was there today. She would tell me that he spent most of hos time at his Texas office. Herman Lay only came once or twice a year to the board meetings from Texas. I would ask her how she stayed sane working by herself all day long. She said that she was doing it for a long time and got used to it.
The biggest perk to working at Pepsico, Inc. was the free sodas everyday. Enjoy,
